Rio Salado College Insurance Studies Certificate Program Helps Veterans Set Foot on a New Career Path

February 10th, 2017 – PHOENIX – The first class of students enrolled in Rio Salado College’s Insurance Studies program celebrated their certificate of completion in December. This first class to successfully complete the program included several veterans who were able to attend classes at the East Valley Veterans Education Center located in Tempe.

Rio Salado College developed the Insurance Studies Program following the Arizona Insurance Institutes April 2014 Workforce Development Summit. After learning of the exponential employment gap the insurance industry was facing, Rio Salado College partnered with the Arizona Insurance Institute and other insurance industry professionals to develop core curriculum and competencies to deliver a quality educational program to students of all ages and backgrounds.

Several of the students attending at the East Valley Veterans Education Center were able to receive assistance through the scholarship offered by State Farm Insurance and are now prepared for a new career path in risk management.

Student and scholarship recipient, Stevie Vega was one of the recent graduates of the insurance studies program; “I’m a veteran, student, mom and now insurance professional! Thanks to Rio Salado College’s insurance studies program, I was able to get the knowledge and tools necessary to start this new and exciting career. The insurance industry is constantly growing and changing to keep up with the times. Many big name companies are making Arizona their new home and that means plenty of job opportunities and growth. This program got me acquainted with many of the industry’s top companies and employers allowing me to get my foot in the door. I am now looking forward to a new and exciting career in the insurance industry.”

Current insurance industry professionals stepped up to guide and instruct the first class of students through the certificate program including Arizona Insurance Institutes’ President, John Walters of Liberty Mutual Insurance.

The Arizona Insurance Institute is encouraging the other colleges and universities throughout the state of Arizona to implement an insurance studies program of their own.
